Saturday, May 3, 9:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. 39th Annual Spring Ten Mile Walk of the SI Greenbelt — Ten moderate miles at a comfortable pace. See wonderful vistas, beautiful woodlands and the blooming of the Pinxter Azalea, Highbush Blueberry and Canada Mayflower throughout our Greenbelt. Meet at our new meeting place where the parking is easier: the beginning of the blue line trail, at the end of Staten Island Blvd. (at the end of the road right above Petrides School which intersects Ocean Terrace). Bring lunch, beverage and sturdy walking shoes as well as camera, binoculars and field guides. We go in all weather but walk is shortened if high pollution

Saturday, May 3   Join Shorewalkers on its annual Great Saunter—a 32-mile walk around Manhattan’s rim.  The pace is steady, but not fast.  We’ll go rain or shine and will walk through more than a dozen parks.  There are many points from which you can easily drop off and catch public transportation. Main start is at 7:30 a.m. at the corner of Fulton & South Streets (in front of Heartland Brewery at the South Street Seaport), and there are other points where you can join along the way. Saturday, May 17th -Paddle by Canoe or Kayak in the Cove! This event will be ongoing every Sunday from May 18th through October 12th from 1-4 p.m. Socrates Sculpture Park's beach at Hallets Cove. 31st Avenue at Vernon Blvd Free canoe and kayak rides are offered by Long Island City Community Boathouse for the community with the support of Socrates Sculpture Park and Partnerships for Parks. Sunday May 25th, Memorial Day weekend, Open House at Inwood Canoe Club   from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Take the A train to the Dyckman / 200th Street stop and walk west on Dyckman towards the Hudson. When you reach the Dyckman Street Marina turn left and walk south on the service road. Our red boathouse is down the service road past the marina. Our program consists of short, guided trips up or down the Hudson River. Trip direction is determined by the tide. We have boats, flotation devices, paddles and everything you need to get on the water. Visitors 18 years or younger must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Everyone needs to sign a waiver as well. Learn about the history, ecology, management and wildlife of  Jamaica Bay . See egrets, herons, ibis, oystercatchers, terns, plus nesting peregrine falcon and osprey. Cost: $45 includes wine & cheese, drinks, fruit, snacks plus guided narrative. Saturday & Sunday, September 13 & 14, 2008 - 5th Annual NJ Meadowlands Festival of Birding Meadowlands Environment Center, Lyndhurst, NJ Join some of the region's best birders in walks, eco-cruises and workshops geared to birders of all levels of experience. Saturday consists of events at the Environment Center, off-site field trips, breakfast, lunch, and a Keynote Presentation. Sunday will consist of off-site field trips that you will make your own way to. Admission to the Festival is $40 (kids age 10-17 free) and includes as many activities as you can squeeze in.
