PARTNERSHIP FOR PARKS ANNUAL
CONFERENCE
Report by Jim Scarcella
Partnership for Parks hosted their annual
conference at NYU Law School on Saturday
April 11, 2015. PEP is a joint partnership of
NYC Parks Department and City Parks
Foundation. The effort to maintain and
improve our parks is superbly supplemented
by volunteers like the Natural Resources
Protective Association, who regularly clean
our beaches, parks and wetlands.
Commissioner
Mitchell
Silver
was
introduced by PEP acting Director Seth
Jones. The PEP gathering was improved by
our
volunteers coordinator
Stefanie
Gutierrez and acting Boro Commissioner
Mike Schnall.
Citizens Committee for NYC and other
resource groups then gave a presentation
on grants and other help available to our
friends of parks and open space. We all had
a chance to ask questions of our
Coordinator and Parks Administrators.
The arrangements included a nice fresh
lunch and beverages It was a great
conference and we came away with great
ideas and better networking.

THE JOYS OF VOLUNTEERING
By Ida Sanoff
As you know, all of us here at NRPA are
volunteers. Most of us are involved with
more than one volunteer organization or
project. And we work and have families and
social lives too.
Every so often though, you meet someone
new and the conversation turns to your vol-
unteer activities. Then, the question comes
up: Why do you do this? After all, volunteers
don’t get paid. Heck, sometimes it can even
cost you to be a volunteer. You use your
own phone, your own computer, your own
car, your own Metrocard. You work all day
and then you do more work for free. You
might be chomping down your dinner with
the phone tucked under your ear while
you’re on an important conference call. Why
on earth would anyone want to do this?
Aaaah, but those people just don’t under-
stand what it’s all about!
We get to see parts of the city and do things
that most people will never get to do, like
watch a bald eagle soar over the top of a
former landfill in Brooklyn. Or go on a boat
